SUMMER COURSES IV: Transcend the ordinary by Pauline Jurado Barroso

-Aprender y mejorar técnicas fotográficas y mix media (fotografiar, grabar, editar, escribir y publicar).

Es coautora de « Art, architecture, landscape in the post-industrial era », University Press of Saint-Etienne, 2015.

At the end of July, we will have the photography & sound workshop "Transcend the ordinary" by Pauline Jurado Barroso, who is teaching now at the University of Lyon.

As a photographer, no matter where I go, I spend my time looking at things through a camera to see how they look once they’ve been pictured. This (kind of compulsive) activity completely changed my way of seeing beauty in things. The course Transcend the ordinary offers to investigate the way art and every-day-life merges together. How could the ordinary become extraordinary once pictured? And more specifically, what kind of (still or moving) pictures has this transcendent effect? Art theory and some artworks from the contemporary art scene will be discussed, some exercises will be proposed. The participants will be encouraged to produce images and sounds around Lumbier, trying to connect with local landscapes, places and social encounters, experiencing ordinary scenes. We will work on the way medias (images, sounds, texts) could be organized to create digital books or online portfolios.
Course objectives:
- Create an alternative representation of the rural.
-Think the frontiers between inhabited places and open areas.
-Think the relationship between the creator and its subject of research.
-Sensitive and anti-spectacular approach of landscapes.
-Inhabit the world as an artist.
-Learn and improve technical skills in photography and mixed media (shooting – recording – editing – writing – publishing)

SUMMER COURSES III: Textile sculpture: Geometry & crochet by Josune García

We will have a textile sculpture workshop in the middle of July -at Calle Mayor 54-, by Josune García.

In Textile sculpture: geometry & crochet, students will learn how to develop crochet simple and complex geometric volumes. Materials and tools introduction, textile sculpture artists, introduction to simple crochet techniques, experimentation and volume construction.
Note (to help students to choose materials): During the workshop the student will not have the time to create big size sculptures, but medium or small size. The objective of the course is experimentation and volume construction research. The purpose of the workshop is not to complete a big piece, but learn how to plan and develop it.

About the lecturer:

Josune García (1972, Bilbao) studied Industrial Design in Barcelona. She was co-founder  of El Plan B design studio, that in 2004 got the Rehabilitación arquitectónica prize by Bilbao city council. She  organized the artistic BLV Art competition in Bilbao, in 2009. She collaborated in Txapelpixel book, editorial Blur, 2010. She also participated in Yarn Bombing's performances with other artists.
Her interest in textile art was casual, learning by herself. At the end, she mixes her industrial design knowledge with textile art. This fact conducts her to research tridimensionality, discovering the world can be recreated by a thread and a needle. What fascinates her the most about crochet, it is the ability to build a whole universe from simple, cheap and common materials.

A friend of her lost his forefinger at the age of three. His brother chopped it with an axe. Thirty years later Josune made him an elegant crochet replacement.

Type of workshop: A practical workshop.

Material provided by the teacher: A handout and filling material.

Material provided by the student: A crochet hook (At least 5 mm), cotton 100g (Or wool, or other materials you would like to experiment with. The thread should be thicker than the crochet hook), a needle to sew wool. Optional: A thick crochet hook and "trapillo" to give a try, sketches with some ideas to develop.

Previous knowledge/abilities/skills required to the student for an optimal academic progress: None.

Headed for: Anyone. Although, it can be a useful tool for artists and designers.

Diploma: Yes, you will get a paper signed by the teacher and the direction telling you made this workshop.

Length: 3 days / 18 hours. From 10 am to 5 pm. One hour break for lunch.

Date: July 21, 22 and 23.

Language: Spanish. (If this a problem for you, I can help translating. It will be easy to follow)

Price: 110 euros.

Where: Calle Mayor, 54. 31440. Lumbier. Navarra.

SUMMER COURSES I: One step beyond the breathing eye by Ilka Theurich

„Hey you, don't watch that // Watch this! (...)
So, if you've come in off the street // And you're beginning to feel the heat (…)
You better start to move (…)One step beyond !” (1)

HA DADO CLASES EN (selección): Instituto Nacional de Artes Escénicas (INAE) Montevideo URUGUAY // University of Hildesheim ALEMANIA// Global School of Media Soongsil University, Seoul COREA // Space MASS, Seoul COREA // Theatre Academy Helsinki FINLANDIA // Art Association Kunsthalle Hannover ALEMANIA // City Gallery KUBUS, Hannover ALEMANIA // Kaskadenkondensator, Basel SUIZA

I am glad to announce Calle Mayor 54 will open its doors with a 5 day/30 hour course, 1-5th July, by German artist Ilka Theurich.

„Hey you, don't watch that // Watch this! (...)
So, if you've come in off the street // And you're beginning to feel the heat (…)
You better start to move (…)One step beyond !” (1)

Ilka will present her performance workshop based on the idea of the breathing eye(2) and questions our interaction as artists with space and time in complex situations. Yoga masters teach a relaxation and meditation technique, which refers to the idea of „breathing through the eyes". In this workshop, we do not immerse ourselves in the science of chakras, prana, and energy centers, but use the potential of this concept to explore our behavior within our art.
To illustrate this, here a hypothetical question: How would our body react when we emerge temporarily from a tense, confusing and complex situation, to visualize breathing through the eyes? Undoubtedly, we would physically slow down and keep away from seemingly overwhelming emotions and external distractions. Our facial muscles would relax, our heart rate would slow down, and in general, we would "regroup" mental, physical, and emotional situational fragments. Our shaping thought would be able, to return to the situation openly and with new approaches to the solution.

REMARKS
1.) Fragments of the lyrics "One step beyond" - Madness, 1979
2.) Concept is used here as a metaphor
